Flood Control Gates Have Fluid Specs, Tight Site, Small Tolerances

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers interim closure of the 17th Street Canal gate closure structure is a symbolic milestone in the federal governmentıs commitment to protect the people of New Orleans. On Sept. 6, 2005, Boh Bros. Construction was building a sheet pile wall braced by the Hammond Highway Bridge to block the mouth of the 17th Street Outfall Canal. The plan was to stop the high water in Lake Pontchartrain from flowing into the city, and, if another storm surge came along, to try and prevent it from pushing up the city's outfall canals and causing further damage to the levees and floodwalls.
