“Non-conformance” in welds has delayed the opening—again—of Calgary’s Santiago Calatrava-designed single-span pedestrian bridge over the Bow River. Calgary’s Graham Infrastructure Ltd. subcontracted Augescon to complete welds in Spain before shipping 16 modular steel diamond-like components to Calgary. The city hired an independent reviewer to spot-check the welds and found “non-conformance.” More inspections are needed to determine the extent of the deficiencies and its added cost and delay, says Mac Logan, Calgary’s transportation general manager. The $24.5- million, 126-meter-long, 6.2-m-wide bridge originally was set to open in fall 2010. Complex fabricating for the webbed helix design delayed the opening until June 2011. Logan says the new delay could stretch into 2012.
