Work Crew Evacuated as Live World War II Bomb is Defused at London Project Site

U.K. military munitions experts on May 22 successfully defused an unexploded bomb dating from World War II that was found during excavation work on a residential-retail project near Wembley Stadium in London. The explosive, estimated at 110 lb, is thought to have been dropped during Nazi raids in the early 1940s, officials said. The discovery prompted evacuation of nearby homes and businesses as well as workers at the site of Dexion House, a two-building complex set for completion in June 2016. It will provide student housing, recreational facilities and retail space in two multistory buildings, according to a report in Building, a U.K. publication. The report said engineers built a blast wall around the site to limit the damage of an accidental explosion.

Massachusetts Hires Engineer to Study Plan To Decongest Cape Cod Traffic

A plan to build a privately funded third bridge over the Cape Cod Canal to ease traffic congestion is gaining momentum. Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker (R) said the plan "depends a lot on the ability of finding somebody who wants to finance it and all the issues associated with constructing it." The new one-way toll bridge, which would be limited to cape-bound traffic, would be built immediately west of the 80-year-old Sagamore Bridge, where its three lanes would be converted to only off-cape traffic. The Bourne Bridge, similar in age, would keep its two lanes in each direction. Fay, Spofford and Thorndike is studying traffic patterns around Cape Cod for the Massachusetts Dept. of Transportation. Over the summer, the agency and the consulting engineer plan to assess the impact of the third bridge.
