After receiving a certificate of occupancy on May 12 for its new, $250-million 787 Dreamliner final production facility in North Charleston, S.C., Boeing started moving workers into the nearly completed building. The facility is the subject of a National Labor Relations Board complaint, issued in April 2011, which seeks to prevent Boeing from locating the 787 production line at the new facility. A joint venture of BE&K Building Group and Turner Construction Co., Greenville, S.C., is nearing completion of the 692,000-sq-ft facility, which started construction in November 2009. BE&K/Turner worked with design firm BRPH Cos., Melbourne, Fla., on the design-build project. The new building’s roof features approximately 10 acres of thin-film solar laminate panels, capable of producing 2.6 MW of power, making it the largest such installation in South Carolina and the sixth largest nationally, according to Boeing.
