A vast aluminum smelter is taking shape in Abu Dhabi. The developer is Emirates Aluminum, a 50-50 joint venture of Mubadala Development Co., an investment arm of the Abu Dhabi government, and Dubai Aluminum. A joint venture of SNC-Lavalin and WorleyParsons holds the engineering, procurement and construction management contract for the first of two phases. The 6 sq km site is at the Khalifa Port Industrial Zone in Taweelah, a nascent hub for shipping, logistics and industrial development. The smelter will produce sow, standard ingots, billet and sheet ingots. The project includes a 2,000 MW gas-fired combined- cycle powerplant, with turbines supplied by General Electric. Phase one will encompass 756 reduction cells arranged in two pot lines, an anode manufacturing plant and a multiproduct cast house, with an annual production capacity of 700,000 tonnes. Phase one is on schedule for completion in April 2010 and is expected to cost $5.7 billion. Phase two will increase production to 1.4 million tonnes—the world’s largest single-site aluminum complex.
