Retail/Mixed-Use: Pearl Brewery Development

Text size: A A

Originally built in 1883, the Pearl Brewery is one of San Antonio's most visited landmarks. Brewery owners Silver Ventures turned to Joeris General Contractors to update the property and its aging structures.

The scope of work included renovations to the historic conveyor and removal of existing foundations and piers in the area. Many of the old brewery's original features were recycled and re-used. Given the site's location alongside the San Antonio River and the project's construction activities between existing historical and occupied structures, the laydown area was limited and jobsite cleanliness was crucial.

The contractor team incorporated several unusual construction strategies, the most visible of which involved the project tower crane's swing path: The 225-ft-tall crane was 50 ft taller than the brewery's smokestack, allowing for complete clearance.

One judge commented, "The craftsmanship on this project was evident in the re-use/re-purposing of existing site elements. The maintenance of the site structures—the original facilities' smokestack, for example—during construction showed a true commitment to ensuring preservation of the historic structure and components."
