Each of the 10 winners of ENR New England's second annual Top Young Professionals competition impressed the judges with a multitude of leadership skills. Many in the group are already well known in their respective fields.

An independent panel of judges chose the 10 from a pool of 19 who were either nominated by colleagues or self-nominated. The judges based their selections on criteria that included community service, career experience, industry involvement, industry certifications and professional licensures and/or accreditations currently held or in progress. To qualify for the competition, candidates had to be under the age of 40 as of Jan. 1, 2014, and based in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island or Vermont.

The individuals on this year's list have several things in common, including giving back to their communities by participating in organizations such as Mission of Hope and Habitat for Humanity. Several have volunteered in Haiti and other countries. Some made an impact locally by fundraising for organizations that help the homeless, women in need or people with AIDS.

One of this year's winners has a lifestyle blog, in which she encourages readers to be healthy and active. Another is a leader in a senior life community. Still another, who has children involved in YMCA programs, heads up a buildings and grounds committee for a local chapter.

All of the winners have contributed to landmark and/or sustainability projects. Several are involved in major Massachusetts Dept. of Transportation projects. These include the $1.8-billion South Coast Commuter Rail Extension and the Longfellow Bridge Rehabilitation. Some winners also work on projects outside of New England, such as the Denver School of Science and Technology, which included 65,000 sq ft of innovative learning environments along with interactive building environments that gained the attention of both Oprah and President Barack Obama.

Bradshaw

Andrew Bradshaw
Pursuing large-scale jobs both nationally and internationally

Since joining STV in 1997, Bradshaw has been involved in several high-profile projects including the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's $82.5-million Silverline Courthouse Station project, which involved a significant amount of structural engineering. In 2004, Bradshaw passed the professional engineer licensure exam and is currently providing leadership as package manager for the MassDOT's Longfellow Bridge Rehabilitation design-build project. He is working on a master's degree in global studies at Liberty University in Virginia in hopes of working with STV's international division and plans to take the project management professional exam this year. "It is important to show that you have a basic set of knowledge about project management when pursuing larger jobs," he says. Outside of work, he is an active volunteer with Mission of Hope in Haiti, for which he has led numerous activities including surveying, structural engineering, plumbing and electrical work.

Carr

Jason Carr
Shaping the development of fuel system design
39, Sr. Associate/Fuel System Engineer

Scarborough, Maine

After earning a bachelor's degree in natural resources from the University of Maine at Orono, Carr went on to become a leader in the specialized service of fuel systems engineering. Most notably, Carr has played a role in the development of systems to permit the widespread use of compressed natural gas (CNG) in the U.S. At Stantec, he helps lead a small group that directs the firm's fuel systems engineering work. In the last three years, the group has helped develop large-scale CNG fueling infrastructure for the vehicle fleets of major companies.

Carr has also helped design large-scale, indoor fueling systems for car rental facilities at several major airports. He is a member of three committees in the Petroleum Equipment Institute. In his spare time, Carr volunteers on the YMCA board as the head of its buildings and grounds committee.

Goyette

Greg Goyette
Leading initiatives in civil engineering
37, Associate/Transportation Engineer
Stantec
South Burlington, Vt.

While pursuing a bachelor's degree and a master's in civil engineering at Clarkson University, Goyette was awarded the George A. Gray Scholarship for most outstanding civil engineering student. He took that drive to the professional world and moved up to associate from engineer-in-training at Stantec within nine years. Early in his career, he was chosen to work on several large-scale projects including Fletcher Allen Medical Center, where he developed the stormwater management plans for a $300-million campus expansion. Since then, Goyette has become a key figure in Stantec's work with the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans), helping the agency explore the use of porous pavement at a park-and-ride facility, which is now being monitored by both VTrans and researchers at the University of Vermont to study how this type of surface holds up to brutal northern New England winters. Other accolades include being named Vermont's 2008 Young Engineer of the Year by the state's engineering associations.

Grosshandler

Matthew I. Grosshandler
Growing the practice of modular construction

Grosshandler's list of projects includes the $268-million NewBridge on the Charles in Dedham, Mass., which won an ENR New York Project of the Year Award in 2010. At Bald Hill Builders, Grosshandler has helped complete several high-profile modular projects and is currently working on the mid-rise modular Concord-Wheeler Apartments project in Cambridge. Recently, the Massachusetts's Dept. of Housing asked Grosshandler to participate in a study aimed at making modular construction a more widely accepted practice. He holds a bachelor's degree in building sciences, a master's of business administration degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and has earned certificates in mold remediation and lead abatement. He is also a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Accredited Professional and a licensed contractor in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Grosshandler has volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and is a leader within the Hebrew SeniorLife community.

Miller

James Miller
Providing accounting services to the construction industry

In the 11 years that Miller has been with Marcum LLP, he has provided accounting, tax, consulting and advisory services for construction clients. He is a sought-after speaker on construction-related accounting and auditing matters, and in 2013 he wrote an article that was published in the Construction Accounting & Taxation guide titled "How Internal Controls Help Construction Contractors." Miller is also one of the few reviewers of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountant's Construction and Accounting Guide, which is developed by industry experts and is recognized in Statements on Standards for Accounting and Review Services (SSARS) as an authoritative interpretive publication. At Marcum, Miller serves as a role model for young professionals and recently assisted in the development of a series of construction "lunch and learns" for employees. He is also a member of the firm's focus group, which meets regularly to discuss company initiatives in community service, employee relations and the environment.

Jessica Miller
Striving for leadership
28, HVAC Engineer
TRO Jung|Brannen
Boston

Miller began her career implementing building information modeling (BIM) into TRO Jung|Brannen (TRO JB) without having any prior experience using the software. She taught herself several BIM programs and successfully helped the firm become one of the leading companies to use the process. She transitioned to TRO JB's heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) engineering group and passed the professional engineering licensing exam, fulfilling her goal of becoming an engineer, something she had strived for since receiving a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Boston University. Miller plans on earning American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Healthcare Professional and Certified Energy Manager certification within the next year or two. Miller is active in her local community. She helped a local charity, Be Like Brit, design an orphanage in Haiti. She is also a leader in Boston's health/fitness community, encouraging others through her personal lifestyle blog, Little Miss Runshine.
