The $513.9-million Intercounty Connector (ICC), Contract C project in Maryland's Montgomery and Prince George's counties involved 3.8 miles of new six-lane roadway and 1.3 miles of improvements to U.S. Route 29.
Work included a three-level ICC interchange with Route 29 and 1.9 miles of auxiliary lane and collector-distributor lanes along Interstate-95, including a new three-level interchange at I-95. Twenty new bridges crossing U.S. 29, I-95 and local roads were built.
Bridges that cross sensitive environmental resources feature long-span placement to ensure that piers were not located in streams.
The team proposed wick-drain ground improvements through existing wash ponds, which eliminated the need for more bridges and saved $25 million. An alternative interchange design resulted in savings of $75 million.
