The new 99,568-sq-ft Education Research Building at Eastern Virginia Medical School houses educational and translational research spaces such as core labs, a clinical skills center, lecture halls, classrooms and offices. Virtual-reality rooms let students operate on mannequins while avatar doctors instruct. The project also included 42,853 sq ft of renovations to two older facilities, adding a library and revamping an existing vivarium. The team removed and replaced the brick veneers on the existing buildings down to the foundations and added modern air barriers and damp-proofing materials. Although the scope included three concurrent projects with team members located in three different states, the team was able to finish seven months ahead of the original schedule.
