The $62.7-million expansion doubled the Abingdon Water Treatment Plant capacity to 20 million gallons per day, which addressed increased demands on Harford County's water distribution system. The plant is supplied with raw water from the Susquehanna River and the Loch Raven Reservoir. The two water supplies are very different with respect to water quality, requiring engineers to establish the proper chemical treatment and process design for each. Crews had to coordinate the connection to the 9-ft-dia Susquehanna Aqueduct to avoid shutdowns, while keeping the overall project on schedule. The existing plant infrastructure was also improved to handle the increased production. Plans allow for future expansion to 40 million gallons per day.
