The $1.8-billion center utilizes two circulating fluidized bed boilers to provide steam to a single 585-MW steam turbine generator. The clean coal CFB-based power plant project includes one of the largest air-cooled condenser systems in the industry and is among the cleanest U.S. coal-fired power stations in terms of air emissions. The mountainous site in southwestern Virginia did not have a single location large enough to store all materials. Nine remote yards were required, presenting a tremendous logistical challenge. At peak, the project received more than 900 truck deliveries per month of material and equipment. The team was able to overcome this challenge in part by using RFID tags on critical components and modularizing construction components.
