Explore AEC Features

Adobe Acrobat 9 provides unique advantages created specifically for the needs of the construction, engineering and architectural fields. The result is better ways to organize AEC teams, project information, and collaboration strategies. Among the noteworthy advances for AEC projects are:

  • Advanced file formats: Acrobat 9 supports such important AEC file formats as BIM, CAD, and even the PDF/E standard, guaranteeing the accuracy and integrity of engineering data within a PDF document.
  • True geospatial data: Using GIS data is easier than ever before. Now anyone with Adobe Reader can access real maps and location coordinates within a PDF created by Acrobat 9 – and comment directly within the PDF.
  • Full AEC interoperability: Acrobat 9 lets project teams share data from BIM, CAD, and many other programs and file types. The key is how Acrobat 9 integrates IFC classes, the standard for interoperability, directly into every PDF.
  • Multimedia mark-ups: Acrobat 9 lets users put comments right on a 3-D model, within embedded videos, or in GSI maps. That lets AEC design/construction teams and their clients add measurements and comments within the media and building models directly. Acrobat preserves the context of the “redlines” and comments, helping prevent interpretation errors by other team members.
  • For AEC teams, Adobe Acrobat 9 lets project participants reach across corporate firewalls and create high-impact communications that anyone can use. The advanced AEC features ensure that interactive content built with Adobe Acrobat 9 serves construction projects better than ever before.

    Better Engineering Workflow

Acrobat 9 makes architecture, engineering and construction teams better – by making their workflow better. Among the key advances for engineering collaboration include:

  • IFC import.
  • in-scene commenting in 3D models.
  • compliance with PDF/E standards.
  • improved PDF publishing from AutoCAD.
  • support for geospatial information.
  • automatic and accurate document comparisons.
  • PDF Mapping

With the launch of Acrobat 9, PDF files can now support geospatial information. That means that PDFs retain mapping capabilities from GIS systems – and make them available to anyone using Adobe Reader® 9.

  • Find and locate coordinates. The mapping capability means that anyone using Reader 9 can find and locate points within a map using real geospatial coordinates. With the new “Geospatial Location Tool,” project teams can measure distances in real-world units.
  • Create maps in PDFs. In Acrobat Pro Extended, the new geospatial feature set enables PDF map creation. Users can open Geo Tiff and geospatially enabled Jpeg2000 files directly.
  • Add geospatial map data. Acrobat 9 also has a “Geospatial Registration Tool” allowing project teams to add geospatial information to rasterbased PDF map files.
  • Most important, in every case, locations on the maps retain the geospatial information associated with the location.

The advent of integrated mapping and GIS in the globally used format of the simple PDF represents a massive change in how engineering and construction teams can work together. Use Acrobat 9’s geospatial feature set to redefine project communications.
