Working Better Together

Efficiency, collaboration and productivity are the buzzwords for the best AEC project teams. With Adobe Acrobat 9, partnered firms can eliminate many of the basic obstacles to well-organized teaming processes.

Get on the same page.
  • Synchronized viewing. Another new feature of Adobe Acrobat 9 allows project teams to view documents the same way, in the right location. For example, members of the project team can synchronize document views, allowing various parties to navigate a large CAD file or BIM model together – ideal for videoconferencing or conference calls.
  • Instant comparisons. Just drop two docs into Acrobat, open them, and click the “compare” tool for an instant overview of discrepancies. This feature lets project teams automatically compare documents and control document versions and authorizations, without having the native programs for the docs.
  • Make a better impression.
  • Improved multimedia. Convert audio and video files to Flash and embed them in your PDFs to improve project graphics and understanding of complex construction issues. Even better, the PDFs with embedded video allow project team members to make comments – right on video frames.
  • Integrated project documents. Win new business and ease communications by creating your own branded “PDF Portfolios.” In a PDF Portfolio, every presentation file and document is embedded into one, easy-touse and fully interactive PDF. No more confusing zipped folders of multiple docs; instead, you get a controlled, polished presentation.
  • Get feedback faster and more easily.
  • Multimedia commenting. With Acrobat 9 and Adobe Reader, users can review, mark-up and redline any project documentation. Whether it’s a 3-D drawing, a walk-through animation, jobsite photos or videos, or even BIM files and GIS maps, team members can record their comments within the media – and they will be saved in that location.
  • Expanded reviews. Use Acrobat 9 to bridge various computer platforms used by design and construction firms. Thanks to interoperability and the accessibility of Adobe Reader, even people unfamiliar with CAD and BIM can access and work on the PDFs.

    PDFs with Video and Audio

As construction teams use more and more audio and video data to capture project info in design and on the jobsite, Adobe Acrobat 9 helps organize and distribute those recordings. It’s easy: Just drag and drop video file formats such as QuickTime (MOV) and Windows Media Video (WMV) right into Acrobat for instant conversion Flash movies – displayed right inside the PDF. Plus, you can get feedback on the videos using commenting and mark-up tools directly on selected frames of the Flash movie.

File types that can be instantly converted include avi, mov, mp4, mpeg, qt and wmv files. By leveraging the PDF format – and the Free Adobe Reader – you keep all the Acrobat functionality, including review and comment and the ability to combine the video with other project information.

INTEROPERABILITY: Connecting Project Teams and Processes

How does Adobe Acrobat 9 improve the AEC and construction processes? The answer is all about its underlying technology. The PDF standard is built on XML code, meaning that users of the PDF format can extract data and reuse it. And that means a lot for construction documents:

    1. Document Interoperability. Using PDF, construction project teams can simply and effectively exchange information. Whether the data came from AutoCAD or MicroStation, it can all work together.
    2. 3-D Intelligence. In a PDF, 3-D models and objects retain their descriptive traits. That means BIM data and other 3-D info is retained, and users can comment on that, too.
    3. Transportable data. Not only is the intelligence retained in the PDF, but thanks to the use of Industry Foundation Class (IFC) standards, that information can be used anywhere.
    4. Automatic creation of forms. Adobe’s “Forms” technology instantly creates fields where documents have spacing and underlines. That helps users determine what’s important on a document, and makes it easy to distribute, use, and digitally sign construction project forms.

For a design review, the CAD drawing actually functions like a “form.” Anyone with Reader can view and use the forms, allowing them to comment on the design.

Even better, anyone with Acrobat 9 can make this compatibility and interoperability possible, bringing project participants closer together.

Reader Enabled: Bringing Together the Whole AEC Team

Whether you’re an engineer, architect, contractor or facility executive, Adobe Acrobat 9 gives you the freedom to engage in virtually any project workflow.

    How?

It’s all thanks to the Free Adobe Reader – a software installed on 89% of all desktops.

Right now, for Review and Commenting workflows, users of Acrobat 9 can “reader-enable” a PDF file, giving all recipients in the AEC project team the ability to:

  • open the file.
  • use the same review and commenting tools that users of Acrobat have.
  • fill in and submit data (in the Forms workflow)
  • save submitted data
  • digitally sign the form.
  • Most of the business world already uses the Free Adobe Reader. That’s why we call it a true engagement platform for AEC communications and collaboration. It solves software incompatibility issues faced by project teams. It allows teams to address challenges together. And it bring AEC teams closer to their goals.
