U.K. Funds Development Of Carbon Dioxide Storage Plans
The U.K. government says it will fund development work for the storage of the green-house gas carbon dioxide from fossil fuel powerplants in old offshore oil wells and other geological formations. Some of the Dept. of Trade and Industry’s $45 million backing for its new Carbon Abatement Technology Strategy will go to CO2 capture. Possibly being operational within a decade, the technology could potentially deal with up to 85% of the country’s emissions, says DTI. Trial injection sites off Norway, Canada, Algeria and Australia are being monitored. C02 can be scrubbed from plant flue gas emissions or chemically extracted from natural gas before combustion. Commercial work in this field is being led by energy companies from North America and Europe.
